Candy Chang + James A. Reeves + Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary | Workshop: The Powers of Hope and Anxiety

In 2018, artist Candy Chang collaborated with writer James A. Reeves to create an interactive artwork for the Rubin Spiral lobby: A Monument for the Anxious and the Hopeful. Each day visitors added new hopes and anxieties, totalling over 53,000 submissions. Whether you participated or simply read the contributions, A Monument for the Anxious and the Hopeful truly served as a barometer of how visitors were feeling at any given time. Neuroscientist Tracy Dennis-Tiwary and her team have been analyzing these societal shifts in pressure. The engagement aspect of this experience continues in this workshop in which your hopes and anxieties are set in the context of the hopeful and anxious brain.

Candy Chang is a social practice artist who creates public spaces for people to transform their individual thoughts into a collective experience. Her project Before I Die has generated 3,000 walls in 70 countries since 2011.

James A. Reeves is a writer, designer, and professor of philosophy and art history at Parsons School of Design and Pratt Institute.

Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary is an emotion scientist and Professor in the Psychology Department at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has translated two decades of her research on the anxious brain and the fundamental impact of emotions on health into the development of clinically validated digital mental health tools, including her stress-reduction app Personal Zen. Her work in mindfulness-based stress reduction in at-risk youth is the topic of the documentary film Changing Minds at Concord High. She explores ideas about growing up and growing old in the digital age in her blog Psyche’s Circuitry and blogs about how emotions shape our lives in her Psychology Today blog, More Than a Feeling. She is the co-director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Health Technology and Wellness at Hunter College and the Stress, Anxiety, and Resilience Research Center. Dr. Dennis-Tiwary has appeared on stage at the Rubin for three previous Brainwave sessions: with Congressman Tim Ryan, the astronaut Scott Parazynski, martial artist Shi Yan Ming, mindfulness entrepreneur Rohan Gunatillake, and former Texas Senator Wendy Davis.
