Caryl Phillips Presents A View of the Empire at Sunset | In Conversation with Hilton Als

Award-winning British-Caribbean author Caryl Phillips presents A View of the Empire at Sunset, a daring biographical novel of the life of Jean Rhys, author of Wide Sargasso Sea. A View of the Empire at Sunset is a look into the tempestuous life of the famed writer, born in Dominica in the West Indies and part of the British Empire. Phillips’s haunting novel is equally a story about Rhys, and about the beginning of the end of a system that had sustained Britain for two centuries – but that wreaked havoc on the lives of all who lived in the shadow of the empire, both colonizer and colonized. Phillips presents his new novel in conversation with writer and critic Hilton Als, staff writer at the New Yorker and author of White Girls.
