Celebrate Diversity at the Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturday

ilusha-banjo[1]November’s Target First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum will celebrate the diversity of Brooklyn featuring artists who work with historical and contemporary influences from a wide range of cultures.

The FREE evening’s highlights include musical performances by Ilusha Tsinadze’s Georgian band (5PM), singer Lafawndah (7PM) blends smooth zouk dancehall beats with sonar audio vocals, OSHUN (9PM) performs neo-soul and hip-hop that pays homage to the Yoruba river deity of the same name. There will also be a *curator talk (6PM), pop-up gallery talks (6:30-8:30PM), a series of informal art-making and movement workshops, including a performance by Chinese calligrapher Wang Dongling, and a calligraphy workshop with Society of Scribes, and music presented by Brooklyn Raga Massive (7-9PM). The *Belladona writing collective presents a multigenerational reading of work by adventurous, experimental and politically minded poets (7:30PM). The *Brooklyn Film Festival presents shorts exploring the range of immigrant experiences in Brooklyn (8PM).

Children will recognize their culturally diverse neighborhoods in an interactive reading by Selina Alko, author of B is for Brooklyn (8:15PM).

*Book Club with author Patricia Park discussing her novel Re Jane, which follows a young woman from Flushing, Queens.

Museum admission is free from 5 to 11 pm and includes entrance to galleries and events.
