Celestial Navigation: Science and History

The Yard kicks off its fall discussion series “Wayfinding for the Wayfarer and the Landlubber” with this incredibly content-rich discussion with navigation expert Frank Reed. Visitors will get an introduction to celestial navigation, also known as “nautical astronomy,” and learn how the stars, moons, and planets have guided mariners across millennia. For this talk, Reed will give special attention to the 19th century – the century in which the Brooklyn Navy Yard was founded – and focus information on New England and the history of whaling vessels that sailed the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans.

Frank Reed is one of the world’s leading experts in celestial navigation. Reed is fluent in nearly every technique–both theoretical and practical–from ancient historical methods to modern computer-based applications. Reed develops software and apps for celestial navigation and teaches a wide-ranging set of classes in celestial navigation and related topics at Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut. Reed was a guest “expert in celestial navigation” on a recent episode of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s “StarTalk” science talk show on the National Geographic Channel.

About the series: “Wayfinding for the Wayfarer and Landlubber” explores the history of navigation over three talks: the first two talks focus on navigation in the past, while the third looks at ways we will navigate in the future. Each talk offers a unique perspective on navigation while also giving visitors the opportunity to learn how art, science, technology, and creativity have all affected, and continue to affect, how we move through the world.
