Climate Disasters and the Green New Deal

The increasing frequency and severity of climate disasters around the globe is a great challenge for society, academics, and policymakers. To mitigate climate change, members of Congress have proposed a Green New Deal — a host of economic policies aimed at tackling climate change from the creation of sustainable jobs to pollution reduction.

Professor Stephanie Kelton teaches Public Policy and Economics at Stony Brook University, who also served as Chief Economist on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee and as an Economic Advisor to Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign. She was named one of Politico’s 50 “thinkers, doers and visionaries transforming American politics.” She is also a consultant to a group of new Member of Congress proposing a “Green New Deal”

Professor Claudia Kemfert is an expert on energy economics and sustainability at Berlin’s Hertie School of Governance and head of the Department of Energy, Transportation and Environment at the German Institute of Economic Research. She is a well-known expert on the transformation of the energy system in Europe.

Professor Bob Kopp is a climate scientist, geobiologist, and climate policy scholar, who serves at Rutgers University as Director of the Institute of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences and as a professor in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences. He is a co-author of a recent report on US climate disasters and their economic and social costs.

Professor Stefan Mittnik is a German economist, currently holds the Chair of Financial Econometrics at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. He is a fellow of the Center for Financial Studies, Frankfurt, and known for his work on financial disasters, financial market-real economy linkages, and the empirics of climate disaster risks.

The event is hosted by SCEPA’s Economics of Climate Change project, headed by economist Willi Semmler and generously supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
