Clocks & Industry in Early America

Toast the opening of the current exhibition, hear the Curator speak about the rise of American clockmaking in the 19th-century, and explore the Museum and the beautiful examples of period clocks.

Early nineteenth century New Yorkers had at their fingertips an increasingly vast array of quality furnishings at reasonable cost to ease the burden of daily tasks and make their homes more comfortable. Small shelf clocks, in particular, became something more common for middle income-level households. The widespread success of American-made shelf clocks gives us a glimpse into the interrelated forces of technological convenience, comfort, taste, and affordability that drive the consumer habits of a middle class. This exhibit showcases numerous examples of these clocks and explores the early American clock-making industry. Included with admission.
