The Commandments: America’s Ultimate Top Ten List

Historian Jenna Weissman Joselit explores America’s unique attraction to this ancient biblical text. Her 2017 book Set in Stone: America’s Embrace of the Ten Commandments illustrates how the decrees have popped up in nearly all aspects of American culture. Over time, the commandments have come to represent comic book fodder, inspiration for law, the topic of films, and the ultimate moral compass.

This program introduces a spring program series exploring the Ten Commandments at Eldridge Street.
