David Kertzer will discuss Mauro Canali’s research on the files of the fascist police and censorship commission that oversaw the activity of US correspondents in Italy from the 1920s until the end of World War II. This lesser known aspect of Fascist propaganda, Mussolini’s investment in creating an image for America and the consequences it had on American politics has never been the subject of a systematic study with the exception of John Diggins’s Mussolini and Fascism. The View from America, to which this documentary investigation provides an eloquent background.
Mauro Canali is professor of Contemporary History at the University of Camerino and specializes in the history of the Fascist control and police system.
David Kertzer is the Paul Dupee University Professor of Social Science at Brown University, where he is also professor of anthropology and Italian studies.
