Crown Heights Encounters: Listening Back, Moving Forward

Twenty-five years after the August 1991 Crown Heights riot, BHS, in partnership with Weeksville Heritage Center and Brooklyn Movement Center, gathers for an evening to reflect on the history and future of Crown Heights. The three-part program will explore the multi-storied past of the neighborhood, including issues of ethnic relations, racial justice, and urban renewal that continue to shape the lives of its residents today. The evening begins with a special performance by Creative Outlet Dance Theatre of Brooklyn, followed by a curated collection of oral history clips from Crown Heights residents, and the event concludes with a panel discussion moderated by Inside City Hall host and CNN contributorErrol Louis, featuring Mark Winston Griffith, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Movement Center, Rabbi Eli Cohen, Executive Director of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council,Natherlene Bolden, a member of the Crown Heights Tenants Union, and artist Kameelah Rasheed.
