Culinary Evening with the League of Kitchens

Maryam Monalisa Gharavi and Recess invite you the culminating event of Life of Mohammad, a culinary evening in collaboration with the League of Kitchens. The gathering brings together the cuisine of three immigrant cooks who share food narratives and cultural history from Iraq, Uzbekistan, and Bangladesh, The event intersects with the imagined lives of real/fictional Mohammads Gharavi conjures in her recent work. We are also excited to new screenprints by Assembly Peer Leaders, created in collaboration with Gharavi.

Life of Mohammad constructs a fictional single life from the lives of seven real people named Mohammad. Conceived as a multi-channel video and installation, the work follows the unfolding of ordinary lives held together by the world’s most common—and least culturally understood—name. The project includes public programs, film/video, domestic physical objects, clothing, portraiture, oral history, publication, and a curated library and film archive.
