This Olio will discuss the role of individuality, freedom and obligation both in the soul and in the city.
Taking our cue from the Oedipus story and Plato’s Republic we will analyze contemporary democratic society, which is based on the virtues of freedom and democracy rather than obligation and tradition.
Is modern society Oedipal? And what are its consequences?
Teacher: Vishwa Adluri
Vishwa Adluri teaches Philosophy and Religion at Hunter College NY. He specializes in Ancient Greek Philosophy, Ancient Indian Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Myth. He holds PhDs from the New School and University of Marburg, Germany. He recently published The Nay Science (Oxford University Press) and is the author of many books and articles.
