Czech Center New York Rooftop Movies: “Havel”

The story of Václav Havel, renowned dissident and first president of the Czech Republic. “Havel” follows Václav Havel’s transformation from careless bohemian playwright in the late 1960’s into human rights activist and prisoner of conscience in the 1970’s, climaxing with Havel becoming the leader of Czech Velvet Revolution and president of Czechoslovakia in the late 1980’s. His unorthodox relationship with his wife Olga, who serves as his moral mirror and conscience, propels and echoes Havel’s inner growth from young dandy into mature, responsible man as he is put under growing pressure by totalitarian regime. At first broken by the regime, he raises to admit to his weakness and sets on a dangerous journey to redeem his honor and self-respect, leading to life-threatening imprisonment.
