Daniel Sharfstein in Conversation with Brent Staples

As an abolitionist, Civil War hero, and commissioner of the Freedmen’s Bureau, Gen. Oliver Otis Howard earned national adoration as a champion for racial equality and even became the namesake of one of the historically Black Howard University in Washington, D.C. Despite his seeming regard for civil rights, Howard also waged a dogged and brutal military campaign against the Nez Perce tribe in the Pacific Northwest and their leader, Chief Joseph, an outspoken opponent of the forced relocation of his people.

This is the story recounted in Vanderbilt University Law School professor and historian Daniel Sharfstein’s new book Thunder in the Mountains: Chief Joseph, Oliver Otis Howard, and the Nez Perce War. This story and its repercussions in the age of Reconstruction and post-Civil War attempts at racial justice are presented in conversation with author and commentator Brent Staples.
