This year promises to be the most sweeping in history in terms of the numbers of nations that will be going to the polls.

Some 82 countries will be electing officials, and by the end of this year, 24 will have chosen a new president—an electoral tsunami that promises to sweep across Russia, France and the US, as well as Moldova, Iran, Senegal and Sri Lanka. What does that all mean for America’s relationship with these new governments and, in some cases, entirely new systems?
