Tony Judt (1948–2010) was the Erich Maria Remarque Professor of European Studies at NYU and the founding director of the Remarque Institute at NYU. One of the great historians of Europe in his generation, his many books include Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945. He wrote frequently for The New York Review of Books. This lecture is in his honor.
David Cole is the National Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union. He has been a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, with particular focus on constitutional law, civil liberties, and the First Amendment, and he has argued important cases before the US Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights. His many books include, most recently, Engines of Liberty: The Power of Citizen Activists to Make Constitutional Law. He also writes frequently for The New York Review of Books.
