Delmonico’s: The Restaurant That Changed America SOLD OUT

This unique new event was inspired by Yale History professor Paul Freedman’s acclaimed recent book Ten Restaurants that Changed America. His work is a daring and original history of dining out in America as told through legendary restaurants, revealing how the history of our restaurants reflects nothing less than the history of our entire county. Professor Freedman’s narrative begins in the 1830’s with New York’s fabled Delmonico’s – an exemplar of fine cuisine and our first real American restaurant. Unlike in Europe, before Delmonico’s there was simply very little “dining out” in America apart from taverns and stands selling street food. With it’s fine French food, immense menu, efficient service, and gracious atmosphere, it was truly the first of its kind.
The evening will begin with a 45 minute lecture by Professor Freedman, followed by a sumptuous Delmonico’s meal featuring some of the delicious dishes they invented and remain world famous for serving (see menu below). During desert and coffee the lecture will continue including plenty of time for Q&A.
