Plum blossoms, cranes, maple leaves – so many beautiful kimono have been adorned with these iconic motifs, going back centuries. Designing kimono requires a deep understanding of traditional imagery, combined with a flair for creativity and innovation. Chiso, one of the oldest and most prestigious kimono making companies in Japan, has a long history of kimono design, including Meiji period collaborations with famous Nihonga painters. At this talk, Chiso designer Atsuhiro Imai and President Yasushi Nakata illuminate the kimono design process and the history of their exquisite collection.
