Diedrick Brackens in Conversation with Darnell L. Moore

Join us for a special in-gallery conversation between artist Diedrick Brackens and writer and activist Darnell L. Moore on the occasion of Brackens’s first New York solo exhibition, “darling divined.” The conversation will center on black queer experiences of visibility, identity, and intimacy, which inform both Brackens’s textile works and Moore’s memoir, No Ashes in the Fire: Coming of Age Black and Free in America (2018). The body of work presented in “darling divined” is broadly inspired by the writing of Essex Hemphill, a poet and activist whose work openly addressed race, sexuality, the rise of HIV/AIDS, and other issues affecting the queer African-American community. Brackens and Moore will discuss the impact of Hemphill’s work on their own creative processes and contextualize the significance of his legacy on art and social justice.

Darnell L. Moore is the author of No Ashes in the Fire: Coming of Age Black and Free in America (2018). He is currently the head of strategy and programs at Breakthrough US and was formerly editor-at-large at CASSIUS and senior editor at Mic. He is co-managing editor at the Feminist Wire and an editor of the Feminist Wire Books, a series of the University of Arizona Press. He is also a writer-in-residence at the Center on African American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice at Columbia University.

Gallery talks are free with paid Museum admission, but attendance is limited. Gallery admission must be purchased in order to reserve a spot. Members can reserve here. Students and seniors can RSVP by email for discounted admission.
