Join urban historian Bradley Shaw on a walk down Second Avenue and relive the heyday of the Jewish Theater District, or Jewish Rialto, through stories of the neighborhood, the actors, the restaurants, the hangouts, and the theaters—some of which are still standing today.
Molly Picon, Boris Thomashefsky, Jacob Adler, Moishe Oysher, Menasha Skulnik. Though perhaps less well-known today, from the 1890s to the 1940s all were huge stars of the Yiddish Theater and performed on the "Jewish Rialto," also known as the Yiddish Rialto.
Mostly centered around Second Avenue from Houston to 14th Street, playhouses abounded featuring these stars playing in both original and classic plays such as Der Dibuk (1920), Di Kishefmakherin (1878), and Shakespeare's Hamlet (c. 1601) and King Leer (c. 1605-06).
These Yiddish productions were aimed at the millions of immigrants who were looking for entertainment in their own language, and a familiar piece of the old country.
