Ethics in Film—Awakenings (1990)

AwakeningsSuggested donation: $5, includes snacks and beverages
Ceremonial Hall

Moderator: Chris Everett

Directed by Penny Marshall

Robin Williams plays Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a shy research physician who uses an experimental drug to “awaken” the catatonic victims of a rare disease.

De Niro co-stars as Leonard, the first patient to receive the controversial treatment. His awakening, filled with awe and enthusiasm, proves a rebirth for Sayer too, as the exuberant patient reveals life’s simple but unutterably sweet pleasures to the introverted doctor.

Discussion to follow screening.

Entry to our 100-year-old building and meeting rooms is available for most wheelchair users with prior arrangements. Please call ahead (212-874-5210 x107) for setup of our portable system and plan to arrive one hour before start time.
