Ethics in Film—Breaking Away (1979)

BreakingAwaySuggested Donation $5

Directed by Peter Yates

Dave (Dennis Christopher) is a recent high school graduate in Indiana who is caught with his friends between high school and the rest of their lives. They are snobbishly looked down on by the college students as “cutters,” whose families worked the quarries that built the university. Dave wants to be a champion cyclist so he convinces his friends to enter the university’s “Little 500” bicycle race. This light-hearted and heartwarming film was a surprising success, winning several awards including an Oscar for “Best Screenplay.”
