Evening with Caroline Elkins “Legacy of Violence: A History of the British Empire”

A conversation with historian Caroline Elkins on her new book

“Legacy of Violence: A History of the British Empire”

This is an official  Brooklyn Book Festival “Bookend Event,” held at Revolution Books in Harlem.

Drawing on more than a decade of research on four continents, Caroline Elkins demonstrates how and why violence in Ireland, India, Palestine, Kenya and other colonies underwrote Britain’s empire and the country’s imperial identity at home. In short, the blood and bones on which liberal-democratic “civilizations” sit. Rigorous and passionate, exploding myths of Western paternalism and progress. Caroline Elkins is a Pulitzer Prize winning historian, and the founding director of Harvard’s Center for African Studies.

A panel will follow Elkins presentation with historian Maya Jasanoff, author of The Dawn Watch: Joseph Conrad in a Globalized World, and Raymond Lotta, writer for revcom.us and a spokesperson for Revolution Books.

In this moment of wall-to-wall worship of the queen, come hear the true history of a brutal empire.
