Fall Prevention for Seniors

The Carter Burden Network, New York Presbyterian – Weill Cornell Medical Center, the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, and Physician Affiliate Group of New York PAGNY) present Perspectives on Falls Prevention, a symposium about new national and international innovations in the area of Falls Prevention for the senior population. The event will take place on Friday, September 27, 2019 at New York Medical College School of Medicine and marks National Falls Prevention Awareness Week.

The free half day symposium will address falls as a very serious problem that costs the US healthcare system approximately $50 billion each year. The event is open to healthcare professionals, human services professionals, and the public.

Speakers include:

• Keynote speaker physiotherapist Diedeke van Wijk will discuss a new model of fall prevention in the Netherlands;
• Caitlyn Smith, City Research Scientist II – Fall Prevention Analyst, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will discuss the current state of senior falls and falls prevention programs in NYC;
• Karina Veach, BSN, RN-BC, Irving Sherwood Wright Center on Aging will discuss psychosocial implications of a first fall;
• Ingrid Ayana P. Custodio, BSN, RN-BC, Irving Sherwood Wright Center on Aging will discuss
primary care screening for fall risk;
• Nitin Sethi, MD, Director of the Weill Cornell Medicine Concussion and Brain Injury Clinic will discuss concussion in the older population;
• Thelma Mielenz, Ph.D , Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the Columbia University Medical Center, will discuss predictors of completers of fall risk reduction programs; and
• Jason Machowsky, Exercise Physiologist Clinical Supervisor, Performance Services Hospital for Special Surgery Sports Rehab & Performance will discuss Senior Strength: Gaining Strength as We Age. Is it Possible?

New York Medical College is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. New York Medical College designates this Live activity for a maximum of 3.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
