Family Histories of the Irish Revolution

The Authors are supporting a newly released compilation book, Family Histories of the Irish Revolution by Four Courts Press. During their brief US visit they will share stories of the Easter Rising (New York played a critical role before and after the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916).  Michael and Pat Dolan will share the story of their amazing aunt Eilish (Dolan) who was wrongfully imprisoned in Dublin during the civil war at 15 years of age to save her father’s life. Subsequent to her six month imprisonment, Eilish left home married an IRA volunteer in the Civil War. She changed religion to become a Methodist Deaconess and work in Northern Ireland and in England before returning to Ireland and becoming an accomplished author of fictional novels and patron of the arts – an amazing life and heretofore untold story.

In the Second presentation, Co-Editor Dr Sarah-Anne Buckley will give an overview of the book including core chapters connected to staff stories to their relatives which includes connections to the famous Francis and Hanna Sheehy Skefington – Tom Kettle , Peader O Donnell, and the Forgotten Ten – and stories of unknown activists in the period.  She will also bring together threads in the book including issues of as well as suffrage, gender and how memory and violence have been reconciled through the generations.

Dr. Mark Brennan of Penn State University will discuss the role Americans played in the build up to the rebellion and outline some contributions of Americans towards the cause of Irish Freedom.
