Film Screening and Q&A—Finding Oscar

Finding Oscar (95 min.) tells the story of the search for justice for the victims of the Dos Erres massacre in Guatemala in 1982. The search led to the trail of two little boys, Oscar and Ramiro, who were abducted during the slaughter and raised by some of the very soldiers who had murdered their families.

The film follows the efforts of three remarkable Guatemalan women—Aura Elena Farfan, the founder of a human rights NGO serving the the families of Guatemala’s desaparecidos (disappeared), Sara Romero, a young prosecutor on the staff of Guatemala’s Ministerio Publico, and Claudia Paz y Paz, Guatemala’s heroic Attorney General—who led the efforts to find the the two kidnapped boys and bring to justice the Guatemalan soldiers responsible for the massacre, in trials in Guatemala and the United States.

Speakers

  • Fredy Peccerelli is the executive director of the Forensic Anthropology Foundation of Guatemala, whose work is featured in the film.
  • Scott Greathead, co-producer of the film, is a co-founder of Human Rights First. He has visited more than a dozen countries on human rights fact-finding missions and his writings on human rights and corporate social responsibility have appeared in publications including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and The Nation.
  • Aryeh Neier (introduction) is president emeritus of the Open Society Foundations.
