Fire at Sea: Screening and Panel

Lampedusa has been at the top of headlines as the first landing point for African and Middle Eastern migrants attempting to reach Europe. This film event couples a screening of the powerful documentary, Fire at Sea, nominated for a 2016 Academy Award and winner of the Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear for Best Film, with a panel discussion on the violence that surrounds contemporary borderlands.

Shot between Lampedusa and the Mediterranean, Fire at Sea contrasts the violence surrounding maritime border crossings with the texture of life in Lampedusa and the effect that migration has had on the island. The New School’s Anne McNevin and visiting distinguished professor Sandro Mezzadra join us in an audience discussion on the tensions and conflicts brought about by borderland demarcations.

This is the final event in this semester’s Zolberg Institute performance and film series, pictures in motion. of motion. for motion. Hot apple cider and donuts will be served!
