Five of Forty: What John Harris Saw at Deutsches Haus

Deutsches Haus at NYU presents an exhibition by the photographer John Harris entitled “Five of Forty: What John Harris Saw at Deutsches Haus.”  Founded in 1977 by Volkmar Sander, Deutsches Haus at NYU proudly celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. For five of these forty years, John Harris has been the in-house photographer of our cultural and academic program, capturing candid and insightful moments featuring many prominent guests.

Sparking a transatlantic dialogue between our panelists, but also among the diverse New York public, which attend the events, lies at the heart of our cultural and academic programming; as does an artistic and intellectual exchange between Austria, Germany, the German-speaking part of Switzerland and the United States. Harris’s images depict writers, actors, filmmakers, public intellectuals, and translators including luminaries such as Paul Auster, Teju Cole, Jonathan Franzen, Siri Hustvedt, Carol Brown Janeway, Daniel Kehlmann, Christian Kracht, Yoko Tawada, Ilija Trojanow, Margarete von Trotta, Slavoj Zizek, and many others.

The exhibition will feature photographic prints of some of the highlights of the past cultural and academic events held at Deutsches Haus at NYU between 2013 and 2017, and will also feature an online archive of the individual events at a later point.

Please join us for the exhibition opening on February 27, 2017 at 6:30 pm.
