‘The Art of Real New York: Forming the Metropolis’ Webinar

While modern New York City is highly regarded for so many things — restaurants, finance, tech & innovation, art & entertainment — how exactly did it become such a powerhouse? Through paintings, photographs, sculpture, and other art objects, it’s time to explore the beginnings of New York City’s rise from an afterthought to a global force.

Join New York Adventure Club for the first part of a multi-part series that explores the impact of art throughout NYC and beyond. In this part, we embark on an art-centric journey through 19th-century New York City, and how the period between 1800 and the Civil War would lay the foundation to form the metropolis that we know and love today.

Led by Rena Tobey, American Art Historian and Professor at NYU’s School for Professional Studies, our virtual showcase will include:

  • How New York City became a “hub of everything,” from commerce and shipping to food and spectacle
  • Discussing the developments in transit that laid the groundwork for its 20th-century boom
  • Exploring innovations using a variety of art objects
  • Revealing the diversity of New Yorkers who built its businesses

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Rena — any and all questions about these artworks are welcomed and encouraged!

Can’t make it live? Don’t worry, you’ll have access to the full replay for one week!

See you there, virtually! $10.
