Forugh Farrokhzad’s Captive: Ilka Scobie and Shahrzad Kamel

Forugh Farrokhzad’s “Captive” is a contemporary English translation of the iconic Persian poet’s first collection, published in 1955 in Tehran. Rhombus Press publisher Shahrzad Kamel and editor IlkaScobie will provide a brief biography and an introduction and insights into this pioneering feminist figure, who helped spearhead the Iranian avant garde.

Selections of Farrokhzad’s poetry will be read, revealing that her work, written sixty years ago, remains relevant and inspirational even today.

Native New Yorker Ilka Scobie is a poet and art critic. Recent work appears in London Artlyst, Marie Claire Italia, and American Book Review. She has read poetry at the Bronx Museum, La Mama, Howl Gallery, Bowery Poetry and CCNY Poetry Festival. Her poetry appears in Urban Graffiti, Home Planet News, Resist Much/Obey Little and she is a deputy editor of Live Mag. It was a great privilege for her to work with Rhombus Press on “Captive”.

Shahrzad Kamel is a visual artist living in New York City. She also has an independent publishing project titled Rhombus Press. She has recently published an English translation of iconic Iranian poet ForughFarrokhzad’s first book, “Captive”. Her visual art has been exhibited at The Southeast Museum of Photography in Florida, the Art Institute of Atlanta, Watkins College of Art, Ab-Anbar Gallery in Tehran and Josée Bienvenu gallery in New York City.  She completed her Masters in Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
