Gentrification and Its Discontents

Matthew Schuerman, Aaron P. Shkuda and Van C. Tran with Nikita Stewart
Gentrification is transforming cities, small and large, across the country.

The full story of gentrification is rooted in large-scale social and economic forces as well as in extremely local specifics—in short, it’s far more complicated than its defenders or detractors allow. The New York Times’ Nikita Stewart will discuss issues raised by gentrification with WNYC’s Matthew Schuerman, author of Newcomers: Gentrification and its Discontents; Aaron Shkuda, professor at Princeton University and author of The Lofts of SoHo: Gentrification, Art, and Industry in New York, 1950–1980; and Van C. Tran, Associate Professor of Sociology and Deputy Director for the Center for Urban Research at The Graduate Center, CUNY.
