Gestural Listening: Sound, Touch, and the Body

New media artist Olive Yu (Evilo) leads a hands-on workshop exploring sound as a product of gesture, touch, and embodied interaction — no prior experience with electronics, music technology, or Ableton Live required.

Drawing inspiration from Ash Fure's exhibition ANIMAL [a listening gym] in the Pioneer Works Main Hall, the session invites participants to treat the body as a sensing and sound-making system, where pressure, proximity, repetition, and movement become compositional material. Using a sensor-based kit provided at the workshop, participants assemble a circuit and discover how the body's tilt, reach, and movement can function as a musical instrument.
