The Glasgow Ice Cream Wars

When Marie Carter was a little girl growing up in the eighties in a little town between Edinburgh and Glasgow, she would get a little flutter of excitement every time she heard the tinkling music of the ice cream van. She would pull out her pocket money and go skipping outside, eager to purchase a 99 ice cream. She had no idea the ice cream van had sinister associations.

The Glasgow Ice Cream Wars was a turf war that took place in Glasgow, Scotland in the 1980s. At this lecture you will hear tales of rivaling criminal organizations, violence, intimidation tactics, and a 20-year court battle. This lecture will fuse an obscure history with occasional anecdotes from the lecturer’s childhood growing up in Scotland.

As an added bonus, there will be a pop quiz giveaway and you could win the ingredient that most Americans are missing to make your own 99 ice cream!

Marie Carter is a writer, editor, and tour guide who hails from Scotland. She is a tour guide with Boroughs of the Dead, a macabre and ghostly historical walking tour company. She designed and leads the tour “Haunting Histories and Legends of Astoria.” She is also the author of The Trapeze Diaries and the editor of Word Jig: New Fiction from Scotland.
