Growing Up in a Frank Lloyd Wright House

Kim Bixler’s family owned Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1908 Edward E. Boynton House in Rochester, New York, from 1977 to 1994.  In her multi-media presentation, Kim recounts the joys and pitfalls of owning and living in a Wright-designed home.  Living with the public’s curiosity, playing hide-and-seek, coping with the habitually leaky roof and managing constant renovations make this an unforgettable story.  The Boynton House is one of Wright’s most stunning prairie-style private homes.  During its construction, the world-renowned architect was frequently on-site, supervising all details, including the design of the furniture (seventeen pieces still remain in the house).

Kim Bixler’s latest book, Growing Up in a Frank Lloyd Wright House, is featured in the PBS documentary Frank Lloyd Wright’s Boynton House:  The Next Hundred Years and has appeared on NPR’s Here & Now in conjunction with Wright’s 150th Birthday celebration.  Bixler has traveled the country giving lectures at architectural firms, universities and numerous Wright sites including Taliesin West, Unity Temple, the Darwin Martin House, Wright’s Mason City Iowa sites, the Marin County Civic Center, the Hollyhock House and more.  Bixler has written and edited five other books and currently lives in Los Angeles, CA.  She graduated from Cornell University in 1991.

After the presentation, Bixler will be available to sign copies of her book Growing Up in a Frank Lloyd Wright House, which will be available for sale.
