Guadalupe Maravilla at PPOW Gallery

P.P.O.W is pleased to present Guadalupe Maravilla’s Seven Ancestral Stomachs, the artist’s first solo presentation with the gallery, opening February 26 through March 27.

Brooklyn-based Guadalupe “Lupe” Maravilla came to the US alone as an 8 year-old undocumented refugee from El Salvador. His work includes immersive sculptures and participatory performances that examine the immigrant experience, the harm inflicted on their bodies from both physical and emotional trauma, and offers tools for self-healing.

In his first solo exhibition with the gallery, the artist combines sculpture, painting, performative acts, and installation to transform the gallery into a site for active spiritual and communal healing. Throughout the many teachings Maravilla experienced in his healing process, one notion kept returning – if one cleanses properly, they will heal seven generations back and seven generations forward.

On view will be a series of free-standing sculptures, a new series of wall sculptures and a series of retablos (small devotional paintings traditionally used in Mexican and Central American cultures to honor and celebrate the miracles of everyday life).
