‘Harlem, Part I: The Making of a Neighborhood’ Webinar

Once upon a time in 1600s Dutch New York, the neighborhood of Harlem was considered nothing more than a sleepy suburb, dotted with boerderijen (Dutch for farms) throughout its rolling hills. But after a major battle during the Revolutionary War, the rise of New York City, and the Great Migration, the once quiet enclave would quickly evolve into one of the country’s most bustling neighborhoods. It’s time to explore the birth of Harlem, and how it became one of the greatest cultural meccas in the world.

Join New York Adventure Club for Part I of a two-part virtual exploration of Harlem, which began as a colonial hamlet in the 1700s and morphed into a thriving mecca for migrating African-Americans seeking a better life.

Led by NYC licensed tour guide and native New Yorker Meredith Toback — and assisted by her associate Claude Toback — our digital showcase of early Harlem will include:

  • Notable early Harlem residents including Alexander Hamilton
  • A discussion around the Revolutionary War Battle of Harlem Heights
  • The Great Migration, which brought Southern African-Americans to Harlem
  • A look at Strivers’ Row, a series of historic row houses in Harlem that are both a New York City and National historical district
  • The story behind how the neighborhood became the birthplace of new musical genres, including Blues, Ragtime, and Jazz

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Claude — any and all questions about Harlem are welcomed and encouraged!
