Hello Darkness My Old Friend: Four Authors on Fathers, Sons, and the Darker Angels of Our Natures

In celebration of his debut novel, Darkansas, Jarret Middleton joins Robert Lopez, Emma Smith-Stevens, and Sean Doyle for a reading centered on masculinity, myth, and madness in their separate works.

Jarret Middleton is the author of Darkansas and the novella, An Dantomine Eerly. He was the founding editor of Seattle’s Dark Coast Press and the classics library Pharos Editions, an imprint of Counterpoint/Soft Skull Press. His fiction, essays, and reviews have appeared widely in print and online.

Robert Lopez is the author of three novels and two story collections, of which, All Back Full and Good People are the most recent. He teaches at The New School, Pratt Institute, Columbia University, and the Solstice Low-Res MFA Program of Pine Manor College.

Emma Smith-Stevens is the author of a novel, The Australian (Dzanc Books), and a short story collection, Greyhounds (Dzanc Books), forthcoming in early 2018. Her writing has appeared in BOMB MagazineSubtropicsConjunctionsLit HubDay One, and elsewhere. Her essay “The Sun” will appear in the anthology Not That Bad: Dispatches From Rape Culture (Eds. Roxane Gay and Ashley C. Ford) forthcoming from Harper Perennial. She serves as fiction editor of the literary magazine The Mondegreen and lives in New York’s Hudson Valley.
