Henry Clay: America’s Greatest Statesman

In collaboration with the New-York Historical Society, the Bryant Park Reading Room presents a series of free lectures on popular topics including biography, the Supreme Court, Civil War history, and more.

In his 50 years of public service—including as congressman, senator, secretary of state, and four-time presidential candidate—Henry Clay was a champion for the success of the American republic. A gifted negotiator, his orchestration of the Missouri Compromise and other agreements helped to soothe tensions between North and South and to keep the fragile nation intact—if only temporarily. Historian Harlow Giles Unger provides an illuminating look at the man revered by Abraham Lincoln as the “beau ideal of a statesman.”

Harlow Giles Unger is the author of 25 books, including 10 biographies of the Founding Fathers. His most recent title is Henry Clay: America’s Greatest Statesman.
