HoJung Kim: Eternal Rhythm of Blue

New York, NY- Space 776 is pleased to present Eternal Rhythm of Blue, HoJung Kim’s first solo exhibition in New York. The exhibition explores the relationship between community, history, and nature by experimenting with color, materials, and various artistic vocabularies such as ceramics, paintings, drawings, and installation.

Kim’s working process begins with the imagination of what may lie beyond those deep hues of blue. Nature is a space containing power that transcends human capabilities. When confronted with the greatness of a vast expanse that extends infinitely beyond our vision and human power, we feel a sense of wonder and fear. The artist explores the infinite possibility of color and the various senses it evokes: serene, relaxing, and sometimes intense and stimulating. Such multiplicity of viewers’ experiences stems from the variety of materials and artistic mediums she uses. In her newest Origin series, canvases are filled with fragmented pieces of her previous ceramic works, while the ceramic works contain countless small blue fragments scattered on the surface like the
Milky Way. Kim states: “I just moved them to a flat surface of a canvas and gave them form.” By moving between the dimensions, her works become the vessel for infinite possibilities of expression and expansion, not a container of finite space. The senses of the viewer become awakened, the energy is expressed through the language of color, and the world of nature and the universe begin its transformation into a creative endeavor. The
meaning of the blue may come differently to each of us, but may you find hope and solace beyond the blue.

HoJung Kim (b.1988)’s work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world. In recent years, she has had shows at Print Bakery, Korea (2022); Gallery Jo Yana, France (2021); Make Hauser and Wirth Somerset, UK (2020); The New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives, UK; British Ceramic Biennale (2019); Trend, Ambiente Messe Frankfurt, Frankfurt, Germany (2020); 21st Museum, Kanazawa, Japan (2013). Kim was awarded a Special Prize at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale and invited to Cobalt Blue: Dyed for the
World of Art from Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale in 2021. She earned her BA in Ceramic Art from Kyung-Hee University and MFA in Industrial Ceramics from Hong-Ik University, South Korea, She also has a MA in Ceramics and Glass from Royal College of Art. Kim lives and works in Seoul, South Korea and currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Ceramic Art at Kyung-Hee University.
