Howard Bryant NYC Book Release “The Heritage: Black Athletes, a Divided America…”

NYC Book Release Event with Howard Bryant and his book “The Heritage: Black Athletes, a Divided America, and the Politics of Patriotism”

ESPN Senior Writer and NPR Correspondent Howard Bryant will talk about the heritage of political-social activism of Black athletes — in the face of the racist insistence that Black human beings can only be performative bodies. With Trump and NFL owners seeking to squelch and punish player protest and impose enforced patriotism — Howard’s appearance could not be more timely.

“The Heritage” is the story of the rise, fall, and fervent return of the athlete-activist. Through deep research and interviews with some of sports’ best-known stars — including Colin Kaepernick, David Ortiz, Charles Barkley, and Chris Webber — and others, Bryant details the collision of post-9/11 sports in America and the politically engaged post-Ferguson Black athlete.

“It may make people uncomfortable, but I’m pleased that Howard Bryant has chosen to tell the story of our heritage, and even more pleased that there are still ballplayers today who are willing to stand up for what they think is right.”
—Henry Aaron, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer

In 2002, Howard Bryant published his first book, “Shut Out: A Story of Race and Baseball in Boston.” His 2010 book “The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron” was a New York Times Notable Book of the year.
