Hypnotic Show

An exhibition that takes place in the mind—individual and collective—this intimate experiment in cognitive exhibition making through art and hypnosis was conceived by Raimundas Malašauskas and Marcos Lutyens. It explores how the image and concept of place can be depicted through alternative modes of narrative and serves as an imaginary ending to the exhibition Tales of Our Time.

The first iteration of Hypnotic Show took place at the Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco (2008). Hypnotic Show has since traveled to Kadist Art Foundation, Paris (2009); Artists Space, New York (2009); Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2010); and Documenta 13, Kassel, Germany (2012).

Each session lasts approximately one hour. Please note that certain moments may include physical interaction between the audience and the artists, and that portions of the program require walking, the use of stairs, and lying down.

March 7 and 8, 2017 at 7 pm and 9:30 pm

Raimundas Malašauskas curates in the world and writes occasionally. Marcos Lutyens is an artist who lives in Los Angeles. His work with the mind has led him to develop events and exhibitions that reflect research with specific groups such as the Muxhe from the Zapotec culture in southern Mexico. Building on his investigations into consciousness and social dynamics, Lutyens has worked on large-scale projects that involve the broader surroundings and that often make use of hypnosis. His recent solo shows include Pulled, Galerie Alberta Pane, Paris (2014), and Pushed, Chambers Fine Art, Beijing (2014). His recent group exhibitions include Rockaway!, MoMA PS1, New York, in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial (2014), and thingworld, NAMOC—National Art Museum of China, Beijing (2014).
