Cartoonist R. Sikoryak visits the 53rd Street Library for an illustrated talk on his new book Declaration/Emancipation Illustrated — a double-sided volume rendering the unabridged texts of the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Gettysburg Address in the styles of more than 100 American comics, cartoons, and graphic novels spanning over a century.
Sikoryak traces the book's development from its predecessor Constitution Illustrated, walks through his research into American history, and demonstrates live drawings in the variety of cartoon styles featured throughout. The conversation also takes up how the Declaration has been reinterpreted since 1776, how it directly inspired Lincoln, and how its arguments continue to resonate today.
The talk is followed by an interview and audience Q&A. Part of NYPL's America250 series. Registration required.
