A first reading of a new version of Colin Murphy’s acclaimed play Inside the GPO comes to the Grolier Club as part of its current exhibition and event series, Risings.
The play tells the true story of the 1916 Easter Rising, following the five days in which Irish rebels occupied Dublin’s General Post Office after proclaiming an independent Irish Republic. Patrick Pearse, James Connolly and Tom Clarke are among the central figures in this account of the rebellion, from the seizure of the GPO as headquarters to its tragic finale.
First staged inside Dublin’s GPO to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising in 2016, this new version will be presented in the Grolier Club’s exhibition hall ahead of the Rising’s 110th anniversary. The reading is directed by Irish director Aoife Spillane-Hinks and features a cast of New York and Irish talent.
The program will be followed by the U.S. launch of Bloomsbury’s new anthology Colin Murphy’s Political Plays, which includes Inside the GPO alongside four other Irish historical dramas.
