Intelligence Squared US Debates: Progressive Populism Will Save the Democratic Party

How can the Democratic Party, out of power and outnumbered in Washington D.C. and state capitals across the nation, bring itself out of the political wilderness?

As Democratic leaders and strategists gear up for midterm and 2020 presidential elections, join us live in New York for an Oxford-style debate on the future of the American left. Should Democrats embrace the progressive populism championed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – including Medicare for all, free public college tuition, and a federal jobs guarantee? Or is the best path forward, and the only one likely to empower Democrats in the era of Trump, one that plays to the political center?

Jeff Weaver, campaign manager for Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential bid and author of “How Bernie Won,” teams up with MoveOn.org’s national spokesperson and senior adviser Karine Jean-Pierre to argue in support of the motion. They’ll face Third Way president Jonathan Cowan and Obama administration alum Steven Rattner, who will argue against.
