Intrepid Museum Presents Virtual Astronomy Live: Exploring Astronaut Photography and Art

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will present a Virtual Astronomy Live program on Thursday, July 16 from 5:30pm-7:00pm EST, a free event that explores extraordinary voyages and once in a lifetime experiences have always kindled the creative human expression. Astronauts have attempted to convey what they see and feel when they look down on the home planet. Their sense of wonder and amazement has often been translated by their personal photographs. Other astronauts have returned to Earth inspired to create, while a few others actually created art in space.

The event is hosted and co-produced by John “Das” Galloway, founder of the Kerbal Space Academy, and moderated by Summer Ash, an astrophysicist, rocket scientist and freelance writer.

This is the fourth in a monthly series of Virtual Astronomy Live programs. The next iteration on August 20 will feature Spaceflight and Gaming.

Andrea Meado, Geoscientist for the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit at NASA Johnson Space Center. Andrea works primarily with Astronaut Photography of Earth. Andrea is also a painter and stained glass artist.

Summer Ash: Summer Ash has been both a rocket scientist and an astrophysicist. She is a freelance science writer and communicator whose work has been published in The Atlantic, NBC News, Smithsonian, Now.Space, Scientific American, Slate, and Nautilus.
