12:30pm TOUR GUIDE TALK Tech & Trek
Star Trek‘s thought-provoking storytelling imagined a better future for humanity while commenting on social issues facing the viewing audience. Not only did the franchise boldly go in terms of plot, Star Trek inspired generations of tinkerers, inventors and explorers to push the boundaries of modern science and turn science fiction into fact. Learn what the show got right and what it got wrong in this special talk exploring the relevance and impact of Star Trek‘s tech.
Space Shuttle Pavilion
1:30pm EDUCATION DEMONSTRATION Blast Off: Fueling America’s Space Shuttles
Traveling at 17,500 miles per hour in a space shuttle takes some science, engineering and a whole lot of rocket fuel. In this interactive demonstration, Museum educators launch air-powered rockets and use Newton’s laws of motion to explore the history and future of rocket propulsion.
Space Shuttle Pavilion
2:00pm EDUCATION DEMONSTRATION Helicopters: How do those things fly?!
Helicopters are amazing flying machines, but how do they stay in the air? Using computer-generated models and hands-on demonstrations, Museum educators demystify how helicopters can fly in any direction.
Hangar 2 Stage
2:30pm TOUR GUIDE TALK Light this Candle
“Light this candle!” These three words, uttered by Alan Shepard, began NASA’s tradition of daring space exploration–an endeavor not without risk. Seventeen astronauts who served in America’s space shuttle program lost their lives exploring this new frontier. Learn about the astronauts of the Apollo I, Challenger STS-51L and Columbia STS-107 missions and their legacy for future generations.
Space Shuttle Pavilion
3:30pm Education Demonstration: Poof! Life in a Vacuum
Learn just how important the Earth’s atmosphere is and why astronauts need to wear those big, heavy space suits. Using a bell jar and vacuum pump, Intrepid Educators will mimic the vacuum of space. Participants will first predict, then discover what happens to various objects when they are exposed to a vacuum and then make the extension to how the human body would react to the vacuum of space. (Don’t worry, nothing gross!)
