Invitation to Enter a Portal in Chelsea and Talk to Afghanistan, Cuba, Honduras or Zimbabwe at Danese/Corey Gallery CLOSING

From+AfarEnter a Portal in Chelsea and talk to a stranger in Afghanistan, Cuba, Honduras, or Zimbabwe as if you were in the same room! RSVP free for a 20-minute conversation with a stranger abroad at www.SharedStudios.com/NewYork. The prompt for dialogue is: “What is beautiful to you?” Conversations are private with translation provided.

The NYC Portal is open as part of a group show at the Danese/Corey Gallery in Chelsea called The Museum Imagined, curated by Lilly Wei.

What Are Portals?

Portals is a global public art initiative. We take shipping containers, paint them gold, and equip them with AV technology. When you enter one, you feel like you’re in the same room as someone in an identical container elsewhere on Earth. You can converse live, full-body and with translation as needed.

Since launching our first Portal between Tehran and NYC last December, we’ve been busy thanks to the enthusiasm of you and others like you around the world.

Artists, students, community organizers and others have built Portals in Herat, Afghanistan; Mexico City, Mexico; Havana, Cuba; the Za’atari Camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan; Makakobo, Zimbabwe; Nashville, New Haven, San Francisco and Washington D.C. Together, we’ve worked with partners and Portal hosts including the United Nations, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Sazmanab Center for Contemporary Art, the University of Maryland and many more. And over the coming months we’re adding new sites from Iceland to China.

Since we launched in NYC last December, more than 7,000 people have engaged in 1-on-1 dialogues with strangers through Portals. Hundreds of artists, entrepreneurs, diplomats and students have created unique, global community events through Portals from rock concerts to idea pitch nights. Students have taken classes. Families have reunited.
