Island People: A Storm Relief Benefit & Celebration!

A book release party in collaboration with Ace Hotel New York, WORD Bookstores, CARIBBEING, and New York: Caribbean City at NYU, featuring: Joshua Jelly-Schapiro, Gabrielle Bellot, Garnette Cadogan, Carina del Valle Schorske, Tiphanie Yanique with beats by DJ Jneiro Jarel.

This event takes place at Liberty Hall at Ace Hotel Mahattan.

Joshua Jelly-Schapiro celebrates the paperback release of his masterwork of travel literature and history Island People: The Caribbean and the World, a kaleidoscopic portrait of the Caribbean that illuminates its fierce grip on the world’s imagination. The region and its diverse peoples have helped shape the modern world—through politics, religion, economics, music, and culture.

In the spirit of the experimental re-mapping of the “Caribbean’s Far North” by Jelly-Schapiro and Rebecca Solnit for their prize-winning atlas, Nonstop Metropolis, this celebration positions New York as a Caribbean capital. All proceeds from ticket sales will go toward hurricane and tropical storm relief.

Tickets on sale here and RSVPs can be made on facebook as well.
