It Was a Heck of a Year! Green-Wood Residents in 1872

Bill Greer is the author of the recently-published book, A Dirty Year: Sex, Suffrage, and Scandal in Gilded Age New York. It focuses on 1872 and the real-life characters who made that year both very special and highly unusual. After the publication of his book, Bill took up walking at Green-Wood, and soon found over 17 of his subjects memorialized on its grounds—including “The Great Divine” Henry Ward Beecher, murderer Edwin Stokes, animal rights activist Henry Bergh, impresario William Niblo, and presidential candidate Horace Greeley. Join Bill for a conversation with Green-Wood’s Historian Jeff Richman, in which he renews his acquaintances with these larger-than-life figures.

This conversation is part of our new series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents, Zooming in on History. On the day of the program, participants will receive a Zoom link and access code.
