James Reese Europe WWI Centennial Tribute

Join us for a special WWI Centennial Tribute to James Reese Europe and the Harlem Hellfighters. Co-sponsored by the New York Jazzharmonic, the New York Veterans Alliance, and the National WWI Centennial Commission.

In 1918, James Reese Europe took the Harlem Hellfighter’s band to France as part of the Allied Expeditionary forces, introducing jazz to the continent. His military commission was the culmination of an amazing career that had already seen this American hero make huge contributions to African-American history, labor history, New York cultural history, and music history.

The New York Jazzharmonic Trad-Jazz Sextet, under the direction of bassist Ron Wasserman, will perform new arrangements of Europe’s music from he pre and post-military periods, including recreating some of his important collaborations with Noble Sissle with Vocalist Aubrey Barnes. Some of these numbers were recorded by the NYJ on their recent release, “Take A Bow,”

As an extra special treat, Gene Peters, noted collector of rare & historic African American artifacts, will be on hand showing his special James Reese Europe Tribute Exhibit. This includes both antique musical instruments, and military artifacts.
