Jane Austen’s Persuasion at 200

Jane Austen’s last and most romantic novel, Persuasion first appeared in print in 1818. Join us as we mark its publication bicentenary with a stimulating literary-theatrical evening at The Players on Monday, April 9th, 2018.

This event will feature a performance of Persuasion, as adapted for the stage by Sarah Rose Kearns, directed by Sara Holdren. Afterwards, Austen scholar Juliette Wells will join the director and playwright for a short Q&A.

Dr. Wells is the editor of the Penguin Classics 200th-anniversary deluxe edition of Persuasion (copies of which will be available for purchase at the event); she is also the author of Reading Austen in America and Everybody’s Jane: Austen in the Popular Imagination (Bloomsbury Academic, 2017 and 2011).

The Players, just across from Gramercy Park in New York City, was founded in 1888 by the actor Edwin Booth “for the promotion of social intercourse between the representative members of the dramatic profession and the kindred professions of literature, painting, sculpture and music, and the patrons of the arts.” Anita Taub, a member of both The Players and The Jane Austen Society of North America, is the sponsor of “Persuasion at 200.”

The cast of Persuasion includes Ginger Grace, Jack Halpin, Marc LeVasseur, Daniel Reece, Amanda Jill Robinson (also acting as music director), Maggie Wetzel, Esther Williamson, and Jenna Zhu. We wish to express our gratitude to the performers’ unions (AEA, AGMA, AGVA, and SAG-AFTRA) through the Theatre Authority, Inc. for their cooperation in permitting the artists to appear in this reading.

The theatre will open at 6:30 p.m., and performance begins at 7:00.

Please note that The Players has a “business casual” dress code.
